Case Study: NOC Innovations.

 

NOC Innovations (NOC-I) is the commercial arm of the world-renowned National Oceanography Centre - one of the world’s foremost oceanographic institutions.

 

The goal of NOC-I is to deliver the very best science, engineering and technology to global organisations, to help achieve a sustainable marine economy.

 

NOC-I believes the ocean will be increasingly relied upon to tackle some of the world’s biggest challenges and is therefore constantly motivated to better understand one of humanity’s most valuable assets.
 

The work.

NOC-I required a new website, for a variety of reasons. Firstly, the organisation has ambitious growth plans and needed a site that would be able to successfully scale alongside this growth.

 

Secondly, a new site was required to reflect the recent rebranding exercise that both NOC-I and the National Oceanography Centre had completed.

 

Finally, from a practical perspective, the existing NOC-I site provided very little in the way of a content management system (CMS), meaning that any changes to the site were cumbersome and time-consuming for the marketing team and other users.

 

Blue Circle SEO was asked to support NOC-I during the planning, development, testing and launch phases of their website project. Over the course of the project, we worked closely with the NOC-I team to provide support on:

•    Information architecture planning
•    Site specification
•    Content development and keyword research
•    User acceptance testing (UAT)
•    Migration to new ‘.com’ domain
•    Post-launch SEO health checks and performance reporting

The results.

We worked in close collaboration with the NOC-I team for the entirety of the project, helping to ensure each phase went smoothly.

 

Following a successful launch, the SEO merits of the new site were evident almost immediately. Despite a change of domain – which typically results in a drop in organic performance – traffic remained consistent and was soon higher than it had been at any time during the previous 18 months.

 

Search impressions and the number of keywords in Google’s top 100 search results have both grown, as has the overall volume of organic traffic. What’s more, the site is now performing well for many highly desirable non-branded search terms, such as those relating to NOC-I’s software offerings.

 

As well as the clear quantitative benefits, NOC-I’s marketing team are enjoying the flexibility and ease of use of the new CMS and, more broadly, the site has received an extremely positive reaction from stakeholders throughout the organisation.
